Green Thumb Gardening Tips Presentation
Selinda Barkhuis will share her experience gardening with ducks at noon on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the county commissioner’s meeting room (160) of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Barkhuis has been gardening in Port Angeles with khaki campbell ducks for the last five years, starting with a gaggle of two ducks, which she recently doubled to four.
She will discuss the advantages of raising domestics ducks in the garden. Ducks are good foragers, eating slugs, snails and other pests while adding fertilizer to the soil as well as being a steady supplier of eggs.
She will also explain how to keep ducks healthy and safe from raccoons, cooper hawks and other predators.
Barkhuis uses intensive and organic gardening techniques to grow a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, and herbs on a city lot in central Port Angeles, which was featured in the 2012 Master Gardeners Petals & Pathway Garden Tour. She has been a regular presenter on a wide variety of gardening topics during the last few years.
Her presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Gardening Tips” educational series sponsored by the Clallam County WSU Master Gardeners. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call 360-565-2679.
